People’s Music in NorCal to Close
People’s Music in Sebastopol, California, plans to close on September 1. After nearly 50 years in business, People’s Music was the oldest business on the city’s Main Street.
“It’s been a struggle. Rent keeps going up, margins keep going down, and we can’t compete with the internet at this point,” Laurie Meade, the store’s co-owner, told local news outlet The Press Democrat.
People’s Music was founded in 1973 as a record store by Jane and Duane Phillips. In 1986, co-owner Alex Bryant’s father, Bo, bought the store and expanded it, adding more musical instruments to the store’s offerings and in 2015 Bryant and Meade, who are married, decided to take over and operate the store.
