How Filmmaker George Lucas Saved Amazing Grace Music

By Kimberly Kapela

Nestled in the heart of San Anselmo, California, Amazing Grace Music is a music store with a rich history and deep connection to its community. Owned by Judy Kaufman and John Pedersen, the mom-and-pop shop has been a sanctuary for musicians and a symbol of perseverance since the couple took ownership in 1983.

Founded in 1970, Amazing Grace has always been led by local musician couples, each pairing carrying forward its legacy of supporting Marin County’s music scene. Under Kaufman and Pedersen’s ownership, the shop has become a haven for musicians of all levels, from beginners picking up their first guitar to seasoned professionals in need of expert repairs.

“We’re deeply rooted in folk, bluegrass, old-time and swing music,” Pedersen said. “Unlike stores stocked with rows of electric guitars and brand-new instruments, our collection leans into history, featuring older banjos and vintage pieces that carry a legacy all their own.”

The walls of Amazing Grace tell stories of craftsmanship and passion, adorned with beautifully restored banjos and 18th-century violins. In 2004, the store faced a critical challenge. The building that housed Amazing Grace was deteriorating and rainwater leaked through the roof. When the property owners decided to sell, Kaufman and Pedersen were unable to afford both the building’s purchase price and its necessary renovations, and faced the possibility of closure.

Enter George Lucas, the legendary filmmaker and a longtime San Anselmo resident, purchased the property to ensure its survival. One of Lucas’ children once took guitar lessons at the shop, and over the decades, employees from Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic — Lucas’ special-effects company — have frequented the store.

“I knew George vaguely from playing at the Skywalker Ranch picnics, and I had his assistant’s number,” Pedersen said. “We eventually got a call back from Skywalker Properties, and George decided it was worth investing in this commercial property. He was fully on board–100% behind it. They bought the building and let us stay. The place was in such bad shape that George wanted to remodel it completely. For two years, we worked with a local designer, going back and forth with the town to ensure every detail was perfect.”

A few vintage Star Wars toys are tucked on display, and a framed Empire Strikes Back poster hangs behind the front counter — a tribute to the filmmaker who helped secure the store’s future. Thanks to Kaufman and Pedersen’s dedication to their craft — and Lucas’ generosity — Amazing Grace Music continues to flourish as it celebrates its 43rd anniversary this year. MI
