AUG. 27 I MUSIC INC. I PERSONNEL
Phillips Named NAMM Director of Professional Development

Zach Phillips, the editor of Music Inc. and UpBeat Daily magazines, will be leaving his post this fall to join the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) as director of professional development.

“This is sad, but great news,” said Kevin Maher, president of Music Inc. and UpBeat Daily. “It’s sad because Zach has done tremendous work here, and we’ll miss him personally and professionally. But it’s great news, too. Our mission at Music Inc. is to present information that will help music retailers prosper. It’s terrific for the industry that Zach will be taking that mindset and experience to NAMM.”

“Zach has earned the respect of the industry through his dedicated efforts with Music Inc.,” said Joe Lamond, president and CEO of NAMM. “NAMM University has become a vital part of our members' success. We look forward to the ideas and energy that Zach will bring as we seek continual improvement in the years ahead.”

Phillips has participated in NAMM University as a moderator and panelist. In his new position, he will spearhead NAMM University and all professional development opportunities for NAMM members. NAMM University presents new ideas, useful tips and fresh ways of looking at business to that membership.

“The opportunity to head up NAMM's professional development efforts and NAMM University is a personal thrill,” Phillips said. “NAMM members are some of the most industrious and creative people in the world. Showcasing their best ideas, along with select business-building practices from outside the music products industry, will keep NAMM members thriving and adaptable in these dynamic times.”

Phillips will succeed Ken Wilson, who is retiring. Wilson reshaped NAMM’s professional development department after taking on the position in 2004. He created the Breakfast Sessions and Idea Center at NAMM shows, and is credited with dramatically increasing attendance at NAMM University sessions during his tenure.

An editorial successor at Music Inc. will be named in the coming weeks. “We’re thrilled for Zach,” said Frank Alkyer, publisher of Music Inc. and UpBeat Daily. “But now it’s time to find the next editor with a passion for great journalism and great music retailing. We look forward to building on the fine work Zach has done.”

At Music Inc., Phillips was a key team member, helping the magazine garner industry respect and many magazine publishing awards, including the 2012 Magazine of the Year award from the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE). Phillips is a singer/songwriter and guitarist. A Chicago native, he will be based at NAMM’s headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif.
