In 1946, he formed L. C. Kiesel and was winding pickups on an old sewing machine owned by his wife, Agnes. In 1948, Kiesel changed the name of the company to Carvin, after his two eldest sons, Carson and Gavin. Under Kiesel’s leadership, the company expanded from pickups to guitars, basses, amplifiers, pro audio equipment and other musical accessories. He was also a pioneer in early mail-order catalogs and designed marketing programs that still serve the company 50 years after they were established. After handing the reins of the company over to his sons, Kiesel maintained an office at Carvin’s San Diego headquarters and remained active in company operations. MI | |

Lowell Kiesel, founder of Carvin Guitars, died on Dec. 28, 2009. He was 94.
