The Tenori-On is a digital musical instrument created though a collaboration between Toshio Iwai, a media artist, and Yamaha. It was first marketed in the United Kingdom in 2007. Physically, the unit consists of a square board with a matrix of 16 vertical and 16 horizontal rows of LED buttons or switches. When the lights blink on and off, the Tenori-On provides a visual image of the structure of the music. When these buttons are touched directly, it is possible to compose music intuitively, even without musical knowledge. The Tenori-On makes it possible to perform compositions in real time as the player is composing them.

The Yamaha Tenori-On was recently added to the permanent collection of the Architecture and Design department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Tenori-On is the fifth Yamaha product to be selected for the department’s collection.
