Cadenza Celebrates 35th, Saves School Music

Cadenza Music, a full-line dealership in St. Paul, Minn., will celebrate its 35th anniversary on Oct. 25 with a birthday bash to benefit the St. Paul public schools’ instrumental music program.

This summer, the St. Paul public schools nearly lost their elementary-level music programs due to budget cuts. Eugene Monnig, owner of Cadenza Music, attended school board meetings and offered his dealership as an informal communication center for community music advocates during the budget crisis. The anniversary event will feature performances by Cadenza Music teachers, students and patrons. Headlining the event will be jazz saxophonist Irv Williams with guitarist Steve Blons, who also hosts the local radio show “Jazz and the Spirit.”

“We have been excited about the positive response we’ve gotten from customers, neighbors and vendors,” Monnig said. “There have been some generous donations already, and I’m hoping we can really make a big noise for music education.”
