West Coast Drum Closes

After 45 years in business, Five-Star Drum Shops member West Coast Drum Center of Santa Ana, Calif., closed its doors for good on July 1. Owner Darren Carr cited the difficult economic climate as one of the reasons for closing.

“We got into a situation where our hands were tied, and we really couldn’t be the retailers that we wanted to be,” Carr said. “There is a possibility we may sell to somebody, but I haven’t found that person yet.”

Carr is also seeking a buyer for the West Coast Drum Center Web site, which has had both national and international customers. The shop’s mail and e-mail lists, as well as the walk-in customer and online customer databases, are also for sale.

Carr will continue to be involved in the music industry as a drummer. He plays in the Steve Carson Band.

“I purposely did the retail because I, ultimately, wanted to do both [retail and performance] and people would go, ‘Oh yeah, I want to go to that shop. That’s owned by that drummer in that one band,’” Carr said. “Maybe there will be a phase two 10 years from now.”
