Gibson Launches
Online Lessons

With help from endorsers and education companies like Homespun and Hal Leonard, Gibson Guitar has launched an online music lessons portal on its Web site. The Nashville-based guitar maker currently offers a chance to get lessons in guitar, drums, banjo, bass, dobro and mandolin in potentially 15 musical styles at one of three different skill levels. Instructors include Hubert Sumlin, Ross Bolton, Danny Gill and Nick Nolan.

Each month, Gibson Guitar Lessons will feature a Gibson artist and include interviews and some of the artist’s own anecdotes. For the inaugural month, Sonny Osborne taught the bluegrass banjo and Hubert Sumlin discussed his style and influences with guitarist Jimmy Vivino of the Conan O’Brien band.

More recently, Gibson added “Lick of the Week” to its lessons. It’s “a short-and-sweet phrase or progression that can be explored and absorbed over a cup of coffee.” The phrase is presented in both music notation and tab, and key points are described in the companion text. An audio clip lets guitarists to hear the example performed at the suggested tempo.

“There are so many people who love Gibson Guitar that we wanted to give them an opportunity to join some of their favorite musicians online and learn from the pros in the privacy of their own home,” said Henry Juszkiewicz, chairman and CEO of Gibson. “The lessons are a unique feature specifically designed to help Gibson fans everywhere learn to play their favorite chords while sharing some of our rich musical history.”
